TEACHERS' CHARACTERISTICS AS DETERMINANTS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE IN OSUN STATE

Abstract

The study investigated teachers' characteristics as determinant of Osun State senior
secondary school students' academic achievement in Agricultural Science. It
specifically examined the relationship between teachers' qualification and students'
academic achievement in Agricultural Science, investigated the relationship
between teachers' gender and students' academic achievement in Agricultural
Science and finally assessed the interaction relationship between teachers'
qualification and gender on students' academic achievement in Agricultural Science
in senior secondary schools in the study area. These were with a view to provide
empirical information on students' academic achievement in Agricultural Science in
the State. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design of correlational
type. The population for the study comprised all senior secondary school two (SS II)
students offering Agricultural Science and their teachers in senior secondary
schools in Osun State. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select the sample
for the study. Five Local Government Areas (LGAs) were selected from each of the
three senatorial districts in the State using simple random sampling technique. From
the selected LGAs, four schools were selected from each LGA using simple random
sampling technique and from each selected school, twenty students from senior
secondary class two (SSII) were selected through simple random sampling technique
and all the Agricultural Science teachers in all the schools selected were purposively
used for the study because of their numbers in schools. In all, the sample population
was made up 1200 students and 120 teachers. The instrument used for data
collection are: Teachers' Assessment Questionnaire on Agricultural Science
Teaching” (TAQAST) and Students' Previous School Term Results in Agricultural
Science. Data collected were analyzed using simple and multiple regression
analysis. The results of the study showed a significant relationship between teachers'

qualification and students' academic achievement in Agricultural Science in senior
secondary schools in the State (F=7.467<0.05). Results further revealed no
significant influence of teachers' gender on students' academic achievement in
Agricultural Science in senior secondary schools in the study area (F=0.721>0.05).
Results finally showed no significant interaction influence of teachers' qualification
and gender on students' academic achievement in Agricultural Science in senior
secondary schools in the study area (F=0.765>0.05). The study concluded that
teachers' qualification is a major significant predictor of students' academic
achievement in Agricultural Science
